Kimberly is a village just east of Appleton in Outagamie County.  It is named after John Kimberly, one of cofounders of the Kimberly Clark Corporation.  But that wasn’t its original name.  It was first known as The Cedars, and then Smithfield, before finally becoming Kimberly in 1889.  It’s original name, The Cedars, derived from the Treaty of the Cedars.  The Treaty of the Cedars was a six-day meeting/negotiation proclaimed on February 15th, 1837.  It resulted in the sale of over 4,000,000 acres of land from the Menomonee Indians to the United States for $700,000.  Today there is a historical marker at the site where the treaty was signed. 

The Kimberly Clark Corporation was founded in nearby Neenah in 1872.  It was a phenomenal success and other paper mills popped up in the Fox Valley.  For decades the Kimberly Clark Corporation operated paper mills around the world, one of them in what is today the Village of Kimberly.  It was built in 1889 to make newsprint.  While the mill was sold to Repap in 1976, and changed hands multiple times after that, it continued to produce fine paper, magazine paper and specialty paper until it was eventually shut down in 2008.  Efforts to reopen the mill were unsuccessful and eventually the equipment was auctioned off and the building was demolished.  In 2017, the village acquired the land and plans to develop the area as The Cedars are on the table.
